The body of this well-developed black male with an estimated natural age of between eighteen and twenty-eight years of age was brought to the morgue for observation and identification. We are unable to identify the victim, as there are no records of dental or medical care and DNA files do not match any in our files. The victim is a Free-Range Human and has been tagged John Doe 1289C3 until such a time as proper identification can be obtained.
The decedent was killed at close quarters by a gunshot wound to the chest. The body was recovered by Metropolitan Police, who had been notified that assailants were en route to the Millennium Shedworks Warehouse #3 Bin 68 Container 11; Metropolitan Police did not arrive in time to prevent the slaying. Officers apprehended the assailants in the immediate vicinity of the decedent's cubicle sleeper. The initial investigative report indicates that the decedent lived in the sleeping cubicle and illicitly hijacked power for personal use. Remarkably, the cubicle housed a large number of extremely valuable computer antiques, including a 1982 VAX/VMS minicomputer.
EXTERNAL EVIDENCE OF INJURY: There is a single entry wound measuring one centimeter in diameter. The wound is two centimeters lateral to the left margin of the sternum in the second intercostal space. The exit wound is located over the left lower posterior chest wall and measures six centimeters in diameter. There are circumscribed burn marks to the skin surrounding the entry wound. Gunpowder residue was observed on the victim's clothing and skin. The aorta and heart cavities show severe lacerations. Death appears to have been immediate.
REMAINDER OF EXTERNAL EXAMINATION: The body is remarkable for its muscular appearance. There is sun damage to all exposed areas and several pre-cancerous cellular changes were observed. There are contusions on the back and legs. There is evidence of old tibia-fibula fractures with significant angulation of the tibia and non-union of the fibula that indicate the attempts at closed reduction were improperly performed. I surmise that the decedent may have tried to splint himself. There is a small immunization scar on the right shoulder but no other evidence of routine or preventative medical care. The body measures 1.82 metres and weighs an estimated 86.7 kilos. The teeth are native, yellowed and in poor repair. Untreated gingivitis and decay are observed.
Eyes are brown and the pupils equally dilated. A small area of grey discolouration in the iris led to the discovery of an implanted ocular recording device. Preliminary investigation indicates this device recorded the execution-style shooting of the decedent by at least two assailants. The recording device has been remanded to Scotland Yard for further investigation.
Serologic testing for syphilis is positive, although there is no evidence that the decedent received treatment for the disease. Latent syphilis is often asymptomatic, so the decedent may not have known he was infected. Because this disease poses a hazard to the public health, we are seeking the assistance of other agencies in this matter.
MANNER OF DEATH: Homicide by perforation of aorta due to gunshot wound to the left chest.

Went snooping through the police files. Rotten idea, actually: I don't know Brit systems and their security is pretty good, but it seemed like a necessary tribute to him, if nothing else.

Who wanted Crane dead? The cops say they got a message that the crime was about to occur before it happened-and Crane had pictures of the killers coming for him downloaded from the Shedworks seecurity cameras. Was it just an auto-record he didn't bother to take a look at? Or did he see them coming and alert the cops himself? If he did know the murderers were coming, why didn't he call for help, or run away?
